my shift started early—5:30 a.m.—and by the time 3:00pm rolled around, I was ready to hang up my uniform and head home. But one afternoon, as I was clocking out, I overheard over the radio that housekeeping was shorthanded and we’d have to wait to get people to their rooms.

I hesitated for a moment. I wasn’t part of their team, and no one would have faulted me for leaving on time. Yet I realized something: without clean rooms, there would be no guests to welcome tomorrow...

When I was in my second year at Oxford, I realized I was short, three thousand pounds sterling short to be precise, on my tuition bill. Three thousand might as well have been three million at that moment, because I didn’t have it.

So when Christmas break came, I flew back home to Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, where the snow falls thick and the mall becomes a kind of winter village under fluorescent light.

I walked in, not to shop but to hunt for opportunity. Standing in front of the big map of the mall, I looked for the store where I could make the most for the least amount of time. And there it was: Crescent Gold and Diamonds.

I stepped inside…

Twelve Years. Two Kids. One Big Leap.

Twelve years ago today, we landed in Dallas. Two tiny humans — 3 and 1½. A few bags. A mountain of hope.

We had left London behind — friends, family, familiarity — to start again. New country. New life. New everything.

I thought I knew change. I didn’t.

Lesson one: Adapt fast.
Nothing humbles you like starting over. You learn to listen more, assume less, and figure things out on the fly. Flexibility stops being a skill — it becomes survival.

Lesson two: Growth takes patience.
Roots take time. So does belonging. It’s the same in leadership — you can’t rush trust or culture. You water it, nurture it, and wait.

Lesson three: Lead through uncertainty.
There’s no script for big change. People look for steady, not perfect. You don’t need all the answers — just the courage to face the unknown, and the honesty to say, We’ll figure it out together.

Twelve years later, Dallas feels like home.

The kids are taller. We all are — in more ways than one.

Every new beginning is a test. Of courage. Of patience. Of heart.

And if there’s one truth I’ve learned since that flight from London — fresh starts don’t just change where you live. They change who you become.

Our hope is that by blessing the survivors with these classes, they will be encouraged to keep bringing their very best to the challenges they face in rebuilding their lives.

By providing survivors with the tools, training, and mentorship needed to master this craft, we don't just teach a skill; we offer them a sense of community, a passion to excel, and a trade that can potentially empower their future.
