During the last week of School, I had the pleasure of teaching 7th graders applied mathematics through the delicious lens of Texas BBQ.
We explored real-world math concepts by planning a BBQ party. The students calculated the amounts of meat, and sides needed for a group of people, considering portion sizes and dietary preferences.
They practiced fractions and ratios by figuring out how to split a brisket among different guests, and used multiplication and division to scale recipes up or down.
Budgeting for the BBQ introduced them to financial literacy,
price comparisons and discounts.
Engagement was pretty high as they connected math skills to something tangible and tasty.
This hands-on lesson not only made math more accessible but also highlighted its practical importance in everyday life. By the end of the session, the students were buzzing with excitement and newfound confidence as we then sampled some Texas BBQ!
The real highlight was having my son help out!
